3 Ingredient Flop

Today, I decided to make a batch of Cocoa Krispie Treats to snack on after my morning 6 mile run. How hard could it be making a snack that requires only 3 ingredients: 3 tablespoons of butter, 10 ounces of marshmallows and 6 cups of of Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies. I also wanted to use up the open bag of marshmallows in the pantry so they didn’t go bad.

A couple of months ago, I made the same exact recipe and the The Original Krispie Treats turned out like this.

Yum!

But today they turned out like this:

Not so yum looking

Please don’t pay attention to the empty square in the top left corner of the pan. I had to sample right away to see if the batch was a total disaster. Notice all the white marshmallow areas coagulating on top of the Cocoa Krispies.

What went wrong? I think the problem were these:

Remember to never use these again

I should have learned my lesson the first time that I used these jumbo size marshmallows in the recipe. I remember that it took forever for them to melt the last time so I thought that cutting them into fours would solve the melting problem.

It didn’t! The butter- marshmallow combo turned into one big clump of marshmallow. After I noticed the marshmallow turning a light brown, I decided it was time to get the mixture off the stove and add the Cocoa Krispies. It was not easy mixing in the 6 cups of cereal to the clump with the spatula. I tried a metal spoon but that didn’t work. I ended up dropping the mess into the pan and forming it to the rectangular pan with my hands using parchment paper.
They are still edible and I am sure that I will snack on them. I just can’t believe I botched a 3 ingredient recipe. I have documented this disaster so I never ever use those over sized marshmallows again when making krispie treats.
Hope you all are enjoying this beautiful weekend!
