Weed Out Wednesdays – The Letter C

WOW stands for Weed Out Wednesdays.  Every Wednesday for the next 24 weeks, I will be tailoring my post so you can weed out your homes and closets without feeling overwhelmed that you have to tackle the whole house in one day.  I will make my way through the alphabet one letter at a time and try to cover every imaginable item in your closet and home. 

You should feel the WOW factor once you start this process and have opened up valuable real estate sections in your cupboards, closets, drawers and other storage spaces in you home or apartment.   

I didn’t want to gross you all out with pictures of my old bras – but that is what I purged last week.  I think there was a total of 15 that hit the trash can. 

Moving on…..   

On the agenda for this week, the letter “C”–  calculators, cameras, candles, capelets, capes, cards, cassette tapes (yeah, I’m that old), china, clocks, coats, cookbooks, cookware, corsets, craft supplies, cutlery.

I am certain that my husband will be elated when he reads that I have picked the cookbooks and candles categories to purge. And, I’m pretty sure he will want to help me weed out all the cookbooks we never use.  I might need to solicite some help from all of you readers in which cookbooks should stay and which ones should go.  More to come on that…  I think it is the pictures of delicious meals in cookbooks that makes me want to buy so many of them. 

As you can see, I have selected more specific items vs. broad categories such as cupboards & closets.  The goal is  to make this process manageable and less daunting by targeting very specific items you can achieve in a short period of time.

Some questions you want to think about before getting started.  How many (fill in the blank) do I actually need or do I need this item at all? How often do I use this item?   Is the item broken, damaged, discolored in any way? Does it fit properly? Is it still in style? Does it still match my personality?  Is the item age appropriate? Am I keeping this item for sentimental reasons only?

Getting started is as easy as A, B, C

Allocate enough uninterrupted time that you will need to tackle your item(s).  Typically an hour or two is enough unless you are a hoarder of a particular item.  And trust me, I know some categories and subcategories may take me days or weeks to tackle. But that’s ok because there is a strategy.

Begin your weed out cleanse by selecting one item from the list above that needs the most attention.  If you have the time to conquer all the items in the list, then by all means, go for it.  I will be creating a spreadsheet listing all of these items by household category so I can check them off my list when I have completed.  If you are interested in obtaining this spreadsheet, please email me in the comment section and I will send it to you via email. 

Centralize all of your items in an area that has enough light and room to spread out so you can start the sort.  Make sure you have full length mirror available if you are weeding out clothing items.  You may want to summon a friend or family member to give you the thumbs up or thumbs down on a particular item. I know it is time-consuming, but trying on your clothing items will help in the decision process.   

Once you have gathered all of your items, it’s time to begin the Weed Out Wednesday with the KATH approach. You will remember this purging process because it’s the first four letters of my name.  You have four piles to work with. Inspect each items carefully and place them wisely in the respective pile.

K- Keep it

A- Advertise on Craigslist, local newspaper, curbside or auction it off on Ebay

T- Throw it out

H- Help another person and the environment out by donating or recycling it

I will be reporting back next Wednesday with pictures of the categories I have tackled. In time, your house will start feeling organized and spacious.

Laundry, Laundry GO AWAY!!

Laundry is one of those chores that is never done.  There is always something to wash, dry and fold.    Just think about how great it feels when you go to put away the last stitch of clean laundry from the laundry basket.  That feeling of accomplishment only lasts a few seconds/minutes.  Because at the end of the day,  you remove the clothes that are on your body and slip into your pj’s. In just that millisecond you have just created more laundry.  But how does a family of two generate so much laundry on a weekly basis? It baffles me.  According to my calculations, I should have approximately 134  pieces of clothing, towels and linens to wash on a weekly basis during the summer workout months.  The business side of me calculates that to  approximately 10 loads of laundry.  I have never actually counted the loads of laundry, but it just seems like there is more than 10 loads of laundry.
 
Laundry is probably a part-time job for those families with more than two.
 
I really do enjoy doing laundry.  It’s one of those brainless tasks that you can do throughout the week.   I try to throw a load of laundry in each day before my run so it’s ready for the dryer when I return home with more sweaty laundry on my body. 
 
I will let you in on my secret little laundry helper.  I’m sure you will all agree that the most time-consuming part of laundry is the folding and putting away the clean garments.  My little laundry helper makes folding a breeze and it does all the work for you.  All of your tops will be folded in seconds and the folding job will look like the shirts on the shelves of J.Crew.  I found this item in a pharmacy years ago on one of those “As Seen On TV” shelves.  It’s called the flip and fold (flipfold).
 
Here’s how it works. 
 
First, I try to keep the main clothes separated between darks and whites to make the washing and drying part easy. 
 
Darks & Whites

The three panel flip and fold works best when laid on a flat surface.  As you can see from the picture below, the flip and fold is set on my laundry table. Thanks honey for building me this table when we moved into our house.  If you don’t have a laundry table, any other flat surface or table would work just fine.   

The Flip & Fold

 You start out by laying out your top flat in the center of the board. 

I fold the sleeves in but you don’t have to do that.  The flip and fold will actually fold them in for you if you don’t want to do this step.

Next, flip the left panel over to the right, then flip the right panel over to the left.

As you can see your garment has been folded onto the middle panel.

The last step is to fold up the bottom half of the middle panel.

Final product, a neatly folded long sleeve running shirt.

I just love how all my shirts come out folded the same size. 

It makes putting away your clothes a breeze because they are all the same size.  I find that I can actually put more into my drawers with the uniform sizing effect.  And as a bonus, I don’t have to iron as much as a result of using the flip and fold.

Left-Keep/Right-Throw it out

I am happy to report that last week, I tossed 7 aprons, 1 pair of roller blades- athletic equipment, and almost all of my athletic awards and trophies.  I know, the picture above is an optical illusion. The pile on the left only appears to have more aprons than the throw it out pile on the right. The fabric on the keep pile is thicker and therefore fluffier than the pile on the right.  I kept only my favorites that were special to me or had sentimental value. 

Throw it out!!

Discarding the awards was a tough decision, but I was finally ready to purge.  I have been lugging around these trophies,  placques and ribbons in an oversized tote bin for decades.  I even had awards from science and math fairs from my grammar school years.  To remember all of these achievements, I snapped photos of each one of them and removed the metal tags for keepsake.   I don’t know about you, but it feels good to get  rid of the stuff you don’t use and serve no purpose.  

On the agenda for this week, the letter “B”– bags, bakeware, baking supplies, baskets, bathrobes, bedding, bedspreads, belts, blankets, books, bookcases, boots, bras, brooches, brooms (indoor & outdoor)

TIP:  for all you ladies- open up that unmentionable drawer and get rid off all those bras you never wear! You know what I am talking about.  I’m guilty of keeping old bras for that just in case moment.  Any bra that is too big, too small, ripped or out off shape, just toss.  Trust me, you will feel so good when they are gone and you have room for new additions. 

TIP:  for all you men out there- I didn’t forget about you.  Examine and try on all those belts in your closet.  If they look wornout, discolored and don’t fit anymore- you know what to do.

This Wednesday we will begin with the letter “A” – Albums, Athletic equipment, Athletic awards,  Awards, Appliances, Aprons, A-line skirts, Alcohol, Anoreks, Automotive supplies,  Apps on your cell phone –  Start scanning your mind and think of these items that are buried away covered with dust and cobwebs in your basements and attics.  Nordic tracks, stair steppers, ab machines from as seen on tv infomercials,  roller blades,  bread machines, mini fryers,  high school and college trophies… anyone, anyone?

TIP: You may want to consider weeding out the alcohol last after you have tackled all the other A’s that need attention.  The  alcohol effect may impair your judgment and you will dispose of everything.   Hmmm,  that could be good idea.
